Background: Recreational participation plays a fundamental role in improving or deteriorating the quality of life, meaning that participation in active recreation enhances the quality of life. In contrast, involvement in passive recreation could deteriorate the quality of life. Passive recreational participation is associated with hypokinetic condition. However, in the South African rural context, recreational participation appears to be imbalanced in active and passive activities, because most of the recreational activities are male-dominated. Women seem to participate less in most recreational activities. The possible cause is still unknown.en_US
