Abstract
Data were collected from secondary school teachers on a first-year University Inservice course for mathematics in a calculus
module. There appeared little provision in the course to assist the teacher with learning difficulties. A key research question became what it means to understand a mathematical concept. A synthesis of the empirical findings contributed to suggestions for course design but also indicated that due consideration had to be given to the structure of concept development.
