A case study on using social media as an educational tool by the Western Cape Education Department, in South Africa
Abstract
This study explores district officials’ understanding of the use of social media as an educational tool in the
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) schools within a selected district in the Western Cape
Province. Policy-makers tend to be responsive to changes by often showing the public their intended
implementation strategies, yet do not drive a pedagogical agenda within these frameworks. This study seeks
to gain insights into how the WCED district officials developed and implemented the Information,
Communications, and Technology (ICT) policy and the impact on the pedagogical agenda, especially related
to the use of social media.
